Election officer RK Sharma said there were 49 candidates for various posts. This included five candidates each for president, secretary and vice-president’s posts and 34 candidates for the 21-member working committee.
Earlier, hectic lobbying was seen on the university premises.
ABVP dharna: Activists of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad staged a dharna at the Townhall crossing to register their protest against the infiltration by Bangladeshis into the Indian territory. Speaking on this occasion, ABVP coordinator Ashutosh Singh and Vinay Kumar Singh said infiltration would cast its shadow on the election, which was a serious issue. The activists decided to intensify public awareness campaign to check the infiltration.
JD (U) tirade: The State secretary of the Janata Dal United (Youth) Gautam Lal Srivastav blamed state government for its miserable failure to check the increasing prices of essential commodities and to check the black marketing of kerosene oil. Lal blamed the union government for adopting double standards in allocation of budget for development works in eastern UP. Lal said the only option for speedy progress of the region is constitution of a separate state of purvanchal. He further said that to raise the demands of separate Purvanchal state, a workers’ conference will be organised in February 27 at Kushinagar district.
