In view of the outbreak of Japanese encephalitis in the eastern Uttar Pradesh during the monsoon last year, the station Medicare Centre has geared up against vector-borne diseases.
Wing Commander Sanjeev Sood, senior medical officer, Air Force Station, Bamrauli has drawn up an extensive plan in consultation with Dr RB Singh, deputy chief medical officer (vector-borne diseases) and Lt Col S Adhya, Commanding Officer, Station Health Organisation, Allahabad.
The monsoon season is being observed as anti-malaria season under the guidelines issued by headquarters, Central Air Command.
Though, no case of mosquito-borne diseases (malaria, filaria, dengue fever and yellow fever) has been reported inside the campus in last three years.
Today, the mosquito could breed any where from rice field to cupful of water, said Wing Commander Sood.
The Station Medicare Centre, Bamrauli, has adopted newer strategies for vector control this season.
The station has adopted ‘integrated vector control’ approach that involves coordination amongst medical, administration, work services and education sections. These sectors work together to eliminate any water sources of mosquito breeding and ensure effective surface water drainage of soil. These measures are eco-friendly and do not solely rely on mindless use of chemicals, which are environment pollutants and lead to mosquito resistance in the long run.
“Medicos now have instructions to judiciously use what they call their Bharmastra, synthetic pyrethrods, a biodegradable insecticide produced from chrysanthemum flower; and the most effective anti-malarial drug, artmisinin, derived from Chinese plant, Quinghaosu,” said Wing Commander S Sood.
