To ensure free and fair elections to the Gujarat Assembly, the Election Commission (EC) on Monday appointed five IAS and IPS officers in various districts of the state.

According to an EC spokesperson, MV Joshi will be the new Collector of Valsad.

Four SPs have been replaced in the districts. Wabang Zamir has been appointed SP in Patan, Archana Shivhare Rajkot Rural SP and Amit Vishwakarma SP in Baroda Rural. Surat Rural SP would hold additional charge as SP of Tapi, the spokesperson said.

The EC had earlier posted senior IPS officer SK Saikia as Ahmedabad's new Commissioner of Police and appointed GS Malik as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) border range. Similarly, senior IAS officer Mamta Verma was appointed the new collector of Gandhinagar in place of Sonal Mishra.

The Commission had also decided to send three special observers to supervise the observance of model code of conduct by the political parties in the state from tomorrow.
