A DEVASTATING fire engulfed 20 to 25 huts in Vyas Nagar razing them to the ground this evening. No one was hurt or injured in the fire but the belongings of people living in these huts were damaged.

According to information, the fire started at around 4.30 pm most probably after a gas cylinder burst in one of the huts. Thanks to the dry hot weather and the highly inflammable material with which the huts had been constructed, the fire spread rapidly from one hut to another.

At the time of the fire, most of the people, who are daily wage labourers were away. The few people who were present called the fire tenders and started dousing the flames on their own.

By the time the fire brigade personnel came and started operation around 20 to 25 huts were gutted. Most of these people had been resettled in this area after they were evicted from Dusshera Maidan and Manikbagh Road some three years ago.

Two other minor fires were also reported today. One of them occurred behind Choithram Mandi where a few huts caught fire. The reason behind the fire is not known. Another minor fire was reported from a house in Asrawad Khurd.
