An unidentified woman allegedly sustained bullet wounds, after a gun went off inside a Multi-Utility Vehicle (MUV), parked outside the highly sensitive Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport in Varanasi on Wednesday afternoon.
Phoolpur Station Officer Gopal Gupta said gunshots were heard from inside the MUV bearing Maharashtra registeration number MH 40 AS 2435, parked outside the Varanasi Airport in Babatpur area of Phoolpur police station.
An aged woman received bullet wounds in the abdomen and before the police personnel deployed in security at the parking lot could reach the spot, the MUV with five people including the driver and the wounded woman zoomed away from the spot, he claimed.
Efforts are on to trace the four-wheeler and all police stations of the district have been alerted.
Security at the airport has been stepped up to maximum following specific intelligence inputs about possibility of Nepal-bound flights from Varanasi, New Delhi and Kolkata being hijacked by LeT ultras, hiding in Nepal.
While, the inner zone security at the airport is entrusted to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), the outer zone including the vehicle parking lot and areas in proximity of airport fall under the purview of district police.
