The device planted on a bicycle damaged several shops ahead of the traditional Sinhalese and Tamil New Year festivals on Thursday and Friday.

"It was bomb placed on a bicycle," a local police official said.

"First we thought it was a bomb thrown at the market, but now it is established that it was rigged up on a cycle."
