Hats off to Sonia Gandhi for reminding her partymen and politicians that they have become a laughing stock in the eyes of public. The Andhra Pradesh Congress leaders should take her remarks seriously. Crores have been spent in organising the AICC session in Hyderabad. The banners of the Gandhi family are sycophancy and a waste.

Burning hunger

The article Hunger artists (January 24) by Harsh Mander is heart- touching. Some months back there was a televised news report on deaths in tribal areas as a result of eating roasted poisonous insects. Mander has done a commendable job by taking up the issue again.

Respect the language

This refers to N. Raymond Puri’s article Indian at heart (January 21). The author is right that today’s teen brigade is hesitant to acknowledge the greatness of their own language and beliefs. They are willing to ape the West, but that too, at a superfluous level. As a result, they are losing out on the riches and underlying ethos of both cultures.

It may be okay to have an accent, but it is unpardonable to have the young speak incorrect English in an American accent.

No moral right to kill

The real point of the debate on death sentence is the morality issue (Garbled sentence, January 21). The idiosyncrasies of implementation are irrelevant and so are the conviction rates. The huge poor-rich divide does not matter. It is a clear matter of the idea of the State taking a person’s life. The murderer when committing the crime is ignorant, and now the State is.

Award for alertness

The report Drivers prevent disaster on track (January 24) shows how the presence of mind of committed individuals can avert major disasters. The Railway Ministry should award the two drivers.

At the same time, it is scary that a top priority train like the Rajdhani Express wasn’t secured. The cause of the uncoupling. must be identified. Hats off to the two drivers.
