Hooch claims 19 lives in Kerala

At least 19 persons died on Monday after consuming adulterated toddy from different outlets in Kuttippuram (300 kms north of Thiruvananthapuram) and surrounding areas of the northern Malappuram district.

A piosonous chemical substance, was added in coconut brew for more kick. Angry locals torched at least two toddy shops in Kuttippuram. A contracter, who runs these shops, was taken into custody.

Announcing a judicial probe, Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan said strict action would be taken against the spurious liquor mafia. He also announced a compensation of Rone lakh each of the deceased families. According to the police the victims consumed toddy on Sunday night.

The incident came to light when two bodies were recovered from Kuttippuram railway station on Monday morning.
