Around 12 hours before a jail official found him hanging from the ceiling in his cell at Tihar on Monday morning, Ram Singh, 33, had played a few games of badminton with his three cellmates.
After his keenly contested rounds of badminton, Singh had his dinner in the company of his cellmates inside their 15X12 ft cell and was seen chatting with them till around midnight on Sunday.
Despite his apparently normal behaviour the day before his alleged suicide, Singh had indicated despair to his cellmates at the fate that awaited him and his brother Mukesh.
“Ram Singh’s three cell mates have revealed that he told them a few times since Saturday that he and his brother will certainly get a death term for their role in the rape case. Singh had felt his family would be finished, according to his cellmates,” said a jail source.
At the cell, his three cellmates had slept together in the back portion while Singh slept in the front portion alone.
It was characteristic of Ram Singh in the prison since his arrival there over two months ago in December last year.
Singh and the four co-accused had barely any friends among the co-inmates and were shunned by others.
On their arrival, Tihar jail inmates had greeted Singh and his brother Mukesh with expletives.
Singh had in fact several times asked his co-inmates if they could recommend the name of a good lawyer.
But he got only seething stares and at times, a mouthful of expletives in return.
Singh was described as a “mature, shrewd tough nut” who stayed deadpan and icy during his random interactions with other inmates.
He was not known to have ever expressed any remorse for his crimes.
“Instead of having any genuine remorse for their crime, Ram Singh and the other co-accused would say that they had not imagined their crime’s enormity or repercussions,” according to the source.
The source suspected that Singh might have planned for his suicide “in advance.”
“His cellmates say they were sleeping and had no clue he would eventually hang himself in the night intervening Sunday and Monday. If their version is correct, it just shows how well Singh had planned for his suicide, using threads drawn from his sleeping mat to end his life,” said the source.
