The three-day celebrations began with inaguration of a national seminar- ‘Empowering Rural India through ICT’ by former director of All India Institute of Medical Science Dr Sneh Bhargava.

Speaking as the chief guest, she said despite major projects and schemes, basic facilities like roads, health and electricity in rural India were still lacking.

The government had spent huge funds over magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) but the interest of the poor had not been served so far.Describing the pathetic condition of rural India, Dr Bhargava said that the 75 per cent rural population was crying while the 25 per cent urban area was shining. Bangalore was the hub of information technology, but high number of suicides were committed by farmers of nearby areas. She referred to the report of Union Government that despite sanctioning of 3,000 primary health centres , these were not existing so far in the country. Fighting against poverty and dreaded diseases like AIDS were two biggest challenges where telemedicine would have to play a bigger role.

Presiding over the inaugural session, director of Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences Dr Kartar Singh called upon the people to build a new India because the people had higher intelligent quotient in comparison to other countries in the world.

Hari Chaitnaya Bharamchari lauded the one year progress made by the IIIT-A here to establish a new campus at his Tikarmafi Ashram. One could access different topics like set-up of the court, revenue, police and telephone directory of Sultanpur by merely clicking the mouse. All the poor persons who could not afford lawyers would be given legal aid through the website. People could also lodge their complaints that would be forwarded to the officials concerned through the proper channel and the answers would be posted on the website under the column Responses. Later, this site would be made available in other regional languages, he said.Nearly two dozen experts from the fields of health, telemedicine, law, agriculture and finance are taking part in the three-day seminar.

Prof SK Mishra of SGPGI, Lucknow, Dr VP Singh of Sharda Hospital and Prof RP Bajpai of Hindustan Institute of Medical Sciences, NOIDA, delivered their talks on health and application of information technology.
