Bharat Ratna awardee and shehnai maestro Bismillah Khan said that Hindu-Muslim unity showed that no anti-national or anti-social elements could break the cultural tradition of communal harmony and peace in Varanasi.

“The twin bomb blasts in the city was an attack on humanity executed by some inhuman persons,” he said and added that there was only one God — name it Allah or Ram.

He said that he had practiced shehnai at the Sankat Mochan Temple. “The culture of Varanasi is a confluence of different cultures and no one could break it.”

Former captain of Indian hockey team and Padamshree awardee Mohammed Shahid said, it was shocking that bomb blasts in Varanasi claimed several lives but it was the result of the Benarasi culture of harmony and brotherhood that the intention of saboteurs to spark communal violence was spoiled.

“I never heard about such type of bomb blasts here but it is unity and brotherhood which foiled the nefarious designs of anti-social elements,” he said.

“Here people love each other and participate in festivals of different communities,” he added.

Mufti-e-Benaras, Maulana Abdul Batin Nomani said, members of Hindu, Muslim and other communities were maintaining peace and harmony here and never allowed anti-national and anti-social elements to instigate communal flare up in this holy city. He said that he, along with the members of other communities, held meetings at several places to maintain the traditional Benarasi culture of harmony.
