Shettar, who visited the 97-year-old virtuoso at a hospital in Hubli on Tuesday, told reporters that the veteran singer, a recipient of many national and state awards, "truly deserved the Bharat Ratna".

The Speaker said he had taken up the matter with the Centre earlier.

The vocalist was admitted with severe cough, cold and fever last week and has been in the ICU since then.
