Like father, like son
Like father, like son, goes the old saying. Never does it fit better, than in the case of India’s newest Olympic hero Vijay Kumar, and father Banku Ram. After the 26-year-old army subedar earned a silver medal in the 25m rapid-fire pistol competition, he wasn’t overtly carried away by the historic moment, saying, he had “mentally prepared himself for it”. His father, a former subedar in the army, also echoed the shooter’s sentiment, saying, “it was just a matter of time” before his son would do the country proud.

"I was always sure of Vijay’s shooting skills and knew that one day he will get a medal in the Olympics. This is the greatest moment of my life," he told HT over phone from the family’s native village of Harsour in Hamirpur district, Himachal Pradesh. Mother Roshni Devi struggled to put her feelings into words: "God has blessed Vijay!" was all she said.
Growing up Vijay’s sport of choice was cricket, but after enrolling in the army he developed an interest in shooting. Years of practice later, he finally created history.
