The Banerjee Committee, which probed the February 27, 2002, blaze in a coach of the Sabarmati Express at Godhra that left 59 people dead, concluded that the fire was "accidental".

The incident had sparked sectarian violence in Gujarat that claimed at least 1,000 people.

Roopchand Pal of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) said that the report had negated the plan built by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and the Bharatiya Janata Party to perpetuate a pogrom in Gujarat in connivance with the Modi government.

The MP demanded a public trial of Modi.

Demanding Modi's dismissal, Madhusudan Mistry of the Congress said that the government should decide whether such a chief minister should continue in office for "even a minute".

"If you have shame, expel him," he asked the BJP.

The BJP members raised protests and tried to shout down the treasury benches as the Congress and other UPA allies came out of their seats and started raising slogans against Modi.

Sumitra Mahajan, who was in the chair, adjourned the house till 2.15 pm. However, members continued to trade charges even after the house was adjourned.
