A man who allegedly tried to lure a widow into prostitution got the beating of his life in public from the Nari Sena, a women's group in Jharkhand comprising members who have suffered various forms of sexual harassment.
A man who allegedly tried to lure a widow into prostitution got the beating of his life in public from the Nari Sena, a women's group in Jharkhand comprising members who have suffered various forms of sexual harassment.
The Nari Sena, which is fast acquiring fearsome reputation of the kind earned by Uttar Pradesh's Gulabi Gang, roughed up Aditya Vikram Choudhury aka Vikram Jha after getting a distress call from the widow.
Jha, who runs a local security agency, was made to wear a garland of shoes and paraded through the streets from the woman's house to Albert Ekka Chowk in the heart of Ranchi.
After dispensing their brand of justice, during which women passersby joined in, the Nari Sena activists handed over the middle-aged Jha to police officials who came rushing after hearing about the public thrashing.
Nari Sena leader Poonam Singh said, "Jha tried to drag the 27-year-old widow into the illegal trade by offering her a huge amount of money to visit his clients."
Geeta Devi, another member of the group, said, "Today the victim called us and informed us that Jha was in her house, trying various means to pull her into the illegal trade."
Jha denied all the allegations. "The woman is lying. She is insurance agent. I went to her house in connection with an insurance," he said.
The woman, however, lodged a complaint at Kotwali police station and accused Jha of pressuring her to offer escort services. She said a woman was assisting Jha to pressure her.
The complaint was later forwarded to the Sukhdevnagar police station
Ranchi senior superintendent of police Bhimsen Tuti said, "We have registered an FIR and are conducting an inquiry."
