CHIEF MINISTER Shivraj Singh Chouhan is likely to inaugurate the Indore City Transport Services Limited (ICTSL) office on January 25. As per the tentative schedule, the Chief Minister would make a brief halt in the City on Wednesday, before leaving for Jhabua.

The joint company formed to launch City buses has taken possession of the building that housed Masonic Lodge on A B Road till December 31, 2005. The building hall is being renovated to accommodate the company office. There are plans to set up control room and bus operators’ counter there as well. The open land encompassing the building would be used as night shelter to park buses, though it would be a temporary arrangement.

However, the company has deferred plying of buses till next month. Against its initial plan to commence operations with a fleet of dozen buses from January 26, the management has decided to start only after it gets one bus to ply on each of the 16 routes.

When contacted, SDM and bus project in-charge Chandramauli Shukla said that the company would be in a position to begin with 16 buses by February 14. The company hopes to receive all 33 buses by February 23.

Nevertheless, the company will display one of the half-dozen buses that arrived from Goa at the Republic Day function. The bus will be rolled before the crowd to give them a first-hand view of the imminent mode of public transport.

The public transport company is expecting good response from the day it begins operations, keeping in view that similar projects had been well received at Delhi, Chandigarh and Mumbai.

Though other cities have similar buses, ICTSL will be the first such company in the country to be jointly managed by district administration, municipal corporation (Indore Municipal Corporation) and local development authority (Indore Development Authority), and also where the three agencies have evolved a common framework to decongest City roads that would eventually help decrease air pollution levels.
