Defending the government's decision to hold civic body elections in the state on non-party basis, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati today said it was in the interest of common man as the move was aimed at strengthening the Panchayati Raj system.

"The local bodies are entrusted with the task of development and elections on party symbols affect their basic job. Many a time it is seen that due to policial affiliations development work (by local bodies) takes a back seat", Mayawati said in a statement here.
The decision was only aimed at strengthening the Panchyati Raj system, she said adding that there was no politics involved in it.
She said that opposition parties were unnecessarily making a hue and cry over the issue to gain political mileage.
