Mumbai can be financial capital of Asia, says PM

The Prime Minister said a proposal to make Mumbai a regional financial centre was under 'active' consideration.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has said that Mumbai has the capacity of emerging as the financial capital of Asia by banking on its human resource and commercial acumen.

"Mumbai has the human skills, the connectivity and the advantage of location to become the financial capital of Asia," the Prime Minister told a business conference organised by the Asia Society and Confederation of Indian Industry.

"It will get the infrastructure it rightfully deserves to realise this dream," he told the business leaders from India and the overseas.

The Prime Minister said a proposal to make Mumbai a regional financial centre was already under "active" consideration.

"Mumbai, with all its inherent advantages, in terms of human capital and commercial acumen, can be positioned as a viable regional financial centre."

Terming Mumbai as India's one of the most cosmopolitan cities, he said, "I do believe that Mumbai can learn from Shanghai's experience in reinventing itself, in rebuilding itself, and in rediscovering itself."
