In an appeal to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Asian Centre for Human Rights urged the government to declare December 29 as the 'National Day on Violence against Women'.

ACHR director Suhas Chakma also demanded establishment of a national award in the name of the victim who died in Singapore.

"No other incident has either evoked or shook the conscious of the nation as this particular incident has. While a number of actions will be recommended by the Justice JS Verma Committee and Justice Usha Mehra Committee, the declaration of December 29 as the 'National Day on

Violence against Women' and a national award in the name of the victim will remind the nation of the need to address violence against women," Chakma said.
