“Justice S. Sagir’s report is a big success for the National Conference. Our senior leaders, both Omar Abdullah and Farooq Abdullah, have been demanding autonomy for the state and we knew one day New Delhi will pay heed to it,” said senior National Conference leader Ali Muhammad Sagar, who is also Law & Parliamentary Affairs Minister in the state.

He was speaking at a membership drive launched by the party at its headquarters in Srinagar. Sagar said the NC was thankful to Justice Sagir for including its autonomy in its report.

“Now time has come to implement it. For that, besides Farooq sahib and Omar sahib, all part leaders have to be taken into confidence before it’s implemented in its true sense,” said Sagar.

The NC leader criticized the rival Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) saying “their self-rule is an oral document as proved by the Sagir report. “We have been stressing the fact that the PDP’s self-rule has nothing in it,” said Sagar.

He claimed the PDP was given proper time to present their self-rule but they failed to do so. “They were delaying to submit the self-rule document to scuttle NC’s autonomy for the state,” he alleged.

Sagar, however, was quick to add: “If there is a better document than autonomy to resolve the Kashmir issue the party is ready to discuss it.”
