Congress party veteran Kamla, 82, former deputy chief minister of Rajasthan, was on Thursday sworn in as the governor of Tripura.
Kamla, who goes by just her first name, is the first woman governor of the country.
Senior Guwahati High Court Judge Amitava Roy administered the oath of office to the governor at Agartala’s Darbar Hall.
Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, senior bureaucrats, high court judges and politicians from different parties were present at the oath-taking ceremony.
Sarkar’s cabinet colleagues, including Finance Minister Badal Chowdhury, Food Minister Manik De, Education and Health Minister Tapan Chakraborty, Higher Education Minister Anil Sarkar and Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee president Samir Ranjan Burman were also present.
Talking to reporters after the ceremony, Kamla said her first objective was working towards the state’s overall development. “I would soon start visiting different areas in the state, including the tribal ones.”
During her long political career in Rajasthan, Kamala has been state minister, cabinet minister and deputy chief minister, besides being associated with a number of social movements.
Born in Rajasthan on January 12, 1927, Kamala joined the freedom struggle at the age of 13. At 27, she became the deputy chief minister of Rajasthan in 1954.
She has been interested in Ayurveda medicine for a long time and played a crucial role in establishing the National Institute of Ayurveda in Jaipur.
