Three children were crushed to death when a wall toppled onto them in an Afghan refugee settlement in Karachi, he said.

Four other children drowned in flooded streets in various parts of the city and two men were electrocuted by felled power lines, he said.

Monsoon rains started lashing the Arabian Sea city on Sunday and were forecast to continue into Wednesday, said Abdul Hamid, an official with the Pakistan Meteorological Department.

Flooding has suspended public transport and created traffic jams, Fazal said.

The rising water damaged a railroad bridge near Karachi on Monday, disrupting rail links to the rest of the country, said Nasir Zaidi, a senior official with the state-run Pakistan Railways.

Authorities were waiting for the water to recede under the damaged bridge before starting repair work, which will take about two days, he said.

Until then, passengers are being taken by bus between Karachi and the train station in the nearby city of Hyderabad, he said.

Heavy monsoon rains have hit many parts of Pakistan in recent weeks, damaging homes and crops and reportedly leaving at least 37 people dead.

In Charsada, an agricultural district in the North West Frontier Province, recent flooding from heavy rain has inundated corn fields and orchards and damaged hundreds of mud-and-stone-built homes over a large swath of territory. No deaths have been reported in the region.
