In a scathing attack on Congress president Sonia Gandhi, BJP leader and Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee remained a bachelor to serve the nation while she gave up her country to get married.

"Vajpayeeji sacrificed everything and even decided to remain a bachelor for the sake of the nation. But Sonia Gandhi did not hesitate to leave her country to get married," he said at an election meeting here.

Referring to Gandhi's foreign origin, Modi said people have every right to know her antecedents when it comes to handing over governance of the country to anyone.

"People must know details of her past. Even a landlord seeks all kinds of details from a prospective tenant and here it is the question of running of the government", he said.

The achievements made by the BJP-led NDA government under Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's leadership during the past five years have surpassed the work done by Congress during its 50 years of rule, Modi said.

"People are impressed by NDA government's performance and for the first time people in the country are enjoying a feel good experience", he said.

The BJP leader claimed that under Congress rule only 11 km roads were being constructed annually, while during Vajpayee's regime the government is building 11 km roads in the country everyday because of its dynamism, efficiency and focus on speedy development.
