ISSUE OF electronic meters running fast has been raised since they were installed in the State but the problem has not been mitigated till date and still persists in Indore. Though percentage of fast and defective meters is negligible but the matter needs to be dealt with seriously as this percentage has increased in span of one year in Indore city.

Percentage of fast and defective meters has increased from 0.658 and 0.930 per cent to 1.076 and 1.567 per cent respectively from the year 2004 to 2005.

The glitch in meters is a double-edged sword which cuts both ways, it affects the company and the consumers as well. Maximum electronic meters of HPL company were found running fast consequently the matter was reported to MP State Electricity Board (MPSEB) by MP Western Region Electricity Distribution Company and the Board is looking into this matter.

Talking to Hindustan Times, MP Western Region Electricity Distribution Company superintending engineer said that primary reason of meters running fast is tampering. He reasoned that consumers apply magnet on the meter to alter its speed which disturbs its alignment.

He added that after the magnet is removed from the meter, gears of the motor are disturbed consequently there is no control on the speed of meter after removal of the magnet. He further said that in some cases there is manufacturing defect in the meter. He informed that now meters are tested in LTMT lab before they are sent for installation. He revealed that sometimes problem develops during transportation.

Number of meters in the City were at unapproachable place and were open consequently there was scope for tampering with them but now Company is shifting unapproachable meters to approachable places and the meters of city will be covered with box to eliminate any chance of tampering.

Sources in the Company informed that there are 3.32 lakh consumers in Indore city and against these installed meters 2187 were found running fast in the year 2004 while in the year 2005 this number grew up to 3574. In the year 2004 there was complaint of 4806 meters while in the year 2005 there was complaint of 8237. In comparison to the large number of consumers these figures of fast meters are very small, he reasoned.

The glitch in the meter is not limited to its running fast alone but some of them are slow while some of them do not move at all.
