The police said these musclemen had been intimidating voters in Najafgarh, a charge the INLD denied. The INLD said the arrests were part of a a political conspiracy aimed at defaming the party.

Singh is the brother of gangster Kishan Pehelwan who is presently in Rohtak jail. The police are also worried that Singh's candidature could escalate tension in Najafgarh. Singh's brother-in-law, Chandrashekhar, was among those arrested earlier.

When contacted, Bharat Singh said, "My campaigners were not carrying any weapons. Neither were they intimidating anyone. The police are just picking up my people on baseless charges." Further, he said, "It is true that I am Kishan Pehelwan's brother. But that in itself cannot disqualify me from contesting elections."
