A dreaded criminal was gunned down in a police encounter near Sector 93 on Friday night, police said.
Ravi Verma was wanted in several murder and loot cases in Varanasi, including the murder of Varanasi municipal councillor Vijay Sharma. He carried a reward of Rs 10,000 on his head.
Police said Ravi had joined hands with western Uttar Pradesh criminals Dharmender Tirthali and Amit Jatand and had started committing crimes in the NCR region also.
Ravi was a sharp shooter of the Anu Tripathi gang. He had shifted his base from eastern to western U.P. after police build up pressure on him in that region.
The police found out Ravi was expected to meet another dreaded criminal, Santosh Verma, near the Mural company.
“A team of the SOG Varanasi and Noida police was formed. Jeetu was intercepted in Sector 93 around 11.50 p.m. on Friday night. He fired at the police team and our officers fired back in self-defence. Jeetu was killed in the shootout. One 9 mm pistol, two magazines, 11 live cartridges, three empty cartridges, one black pulsar motorcycle, a mobile phone Nokia 1200 were recovered from him,” said Senior Superintendent of Police R.K. Chaturvedi.
