ABOUT 20 Pulse Polio teams have been deputed in the Magh Mela area to administer polio drops to children coming from different cities and States on the occasion of Makar Sankranti, on Saturday.

The district health department has also deputed 10 two-member mobile teams to administer polio drops throughout the Magh Mela.

A few teams will be deputed at the main entry and exit points, including Arail and Jhusi, to immunise children.

Pulse Polio booths will also be set up at the health department’s camps and first aid posts.

The next phase of the polio drive is starting from Sunday, but the department has decided to begin the immunisation drive in the mela area from Saturday.

Nearly 30 teams will been deployed at the bus and railway stations and 20 teams will immunise children at different platforms.

A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of the Pulse Polio district task force at Vikas Bhawan on Friday.

Presiding over the meeting, district magistrate Amrit Abhijat told the health department officials to take extra care during the six-day Pulse Polio drive starting from Sunday.

“Although no polio cases have been reported in Allahabad in the last two years, there are cases in Bihar and western UP which can lead to transmission of the virus,” he said. The DM further said the departments concerned needed to co-ordinate with each other to make the drive cent per cent successful.

Deputy CMO and district immunisation officer Dr Swatantra Singh said about 10 lakh children below the age of five would be administered polio drops during the six-day drive.
