The depression moved north-northwestwards and lay centred near latitude 21.7 degree North and longitude 88.8 degree East. The system is likely to weaken gradually into a low-pressure area, the sources said.

The depression is expected to trigger rain and thundershower at many places over Odisha. Heavy rain is likely to occur at one or two places over the state by Friday, the meteorological centre in Bhubaneswar said.

Advice has been issued for hoisting distant cautionary signal at Paradip and Gopalpur ports.

Strong and gusty surface winds reaching 40-50 kmph to 60 kmph is likely to prevail along and off the north Odisha coast.

Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea in the area.
