While popular hill stations in Himachal Pradesh such as Shimla, Manali, Chamba and Dalhousie have been witnessing light to moderate snow, Saturday's snowfall in the low-lying hill areas of Punjab was unusual, said a Met official.

In Dunera and Badhani, both near Pathankot, it snowed for more than two hours. "It started at 5am and lasted till 7am," said Naresh Pathania, a resident of Dunera.

The popular shrine of Chintpurni in Himachal's Una district also saw snow for the first time in many years. Dharamsala, especially McLeodganj, was totally covered in white. Road links in the interiors of Shimla, Kullu and Narkanda were snapped.
