SC asks states, UTs about steps taken for welfare of homeless
The Supreme Court has directed all the states and Union Territories to explain the steps taken by them to provide night shelters to the homeless.
A bench headed by Justice Dalveer Bhandari passed the directions while expanding the scope of the PIL filed by the People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), seeking adequate night shelters for the homeless in the capital on account of the cold wave conditions.
The apex court asked the states and the UTs to file the response after appreciating the efforts of the Delhi government in providing night shelters, blankets, water and other facilities to the homeless.
The Delhi government provided these facilities to the homeless after the apex court intervened and directed the authorities to forthwith provide shelters as a number of homeless were succumbing to the severe winter chill.
