Back in the seventies just when audiences were recovering from a bra-less Zeenat Aman in Satyam Shivam Sundaram, little did they know there was a Mallika Sherawat in the offing, just waiting to blow them away with her 17 kisses. Why just Mallika though, even a Meghna Naidu’s unending Hawas, Shefali Zariwala’s blue thong or Bipasha Basu’s ‘jism sirf bhookh jaanta hai’ line — all grabbed audiences by their eye-balls.

Who were these girls and where did they come from? For those who assumed it was only star kids (a-la Pooja Bedi’s Kamasutra ad) or desperate girls (Mamta Kulkarni’s topless Stardust) who indulged in brazen sexual behaviour were shocked to hear that Zariwala was an engineering student or that Mallika came from a conservative Rohtak-based family. Or more recently, that the girl featured in the infamous MMS clip is an eleventh grader from DPS.

But perhaps we shouldn’t be so shocked anymore. 2004 saw the release of Murder, Julie, Tauba Tauba, Hawas and Hottestmail.com — all mainstream releases with promos running on all major television channels. So next time you watch Jassi with the family, make sure you explain to the kids why uncle is singing to Mallika Sherawat that he’s gonna do her all night long.
