NDA Convenor George Fernandes on Monday participated in a demonstration against Congress leader Sonia Gandhi assuming the post of Prime Minister, alleging that the party had "betrayed" the nation by not projecting her name for the top post before the Lok Sabha elections.

"Congress has betrayed the nation as it never projected Gandhi as premier before the polls," Fernandes said addressing ABVP activists who organised the protest here.

The outgoing Defence Minister claimed that the percentage of votes polled by NDA was more than Congress and the elections were not a mandate for Congress.

"The Congress should be ashamed that it has not been able to project even one India-born leader," Fernandes said.

He said there should be an agitation on the issue of the Congress leader's foreign origin.
