GLOBAL WARMING

GLOBAL WARMING is taking its toll on various species of butterfly, birds and insects. These precious species have migrated from the coastal areas and several other species of amphibians are fast migrating to safer places.
Head of the department, Life Sciences, Chhatrapati Sahuji Maharaj University (CSJMU), LC Misra, said if global warming was allowed not arrested there would be drastic changes in the weather conditions. He added that possibilities of desert turning into heavy rain zones could not be ruled out and the reverse was similarly true.
During his address at the ANDNN Mahavidyalaya’s first science lecture series here today, Dr Misra said global warming had also affected animals living in the coldest valleys of the Himalayas and in the polar region. He said polar bear and sea turtles might become extinct due to atmospheric changes.
Moreover, he said surveys have revealed that by the end of the present century, the sea water level would rise by one meter. This would lead to the disappearance of major coastal areas of the world. Some estimates predict that 25-50 per cent of the coastal areas would be submerged.
Besides, the rise in water level would put additional pressures on rocks. “In that case, volcanic eruptions, tsunami-like phenomena and cyclones will become common,” he added. This, he sad, meant more loss of lives and nature. He suggested that nations should stress on increasing the forest cover to fight global warming. Dr Shagufta Ansari of the ANDNNM College Botany Department said, “We need to recognise that stabilising earth climate depends upon shifting from fossil fuel to carbon-based energy.”
Dr Nandlal of the CSJMU Life Science department spoke of genetic engineering as a knowledge base to change the world. Dr Nutan Vohra, Department of Psychology, ANDNNM College, discussed methods that could be used to relax one’s body and mind in the face of environmental deterioration.
