Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday directed central government departments associated with the 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan' to coordinate with states which are lagging in toilet construction, and suggested involving spiritual leaders to create awareness about the programme.

Reviewing the progress of Swachh Bharat, Modi said involving spiritual leaders would create attitudinal change towards cleanliness. They should be associated with such efforts, especially during major events such as the Jagannath Yatra and the Kumbh Mela.

On the government’s ambitious programme of Housing for All, Modi pitched for a holistic approach towards meeting the target of building three crore houses. The prime minister also asked the official agencies concerned to consider local conditions such as lifestyles and habits while implementing the programme.

“A tribal may prefer a house made of traditional local materials rather than bricks and mortar; and therefore, should be facilitated accordingly,” Modi said.

Chairing a high-level meeting to assess the work done so far, both in the rural and urban areas, the PM stressed the need for all official agencies concerned to adopt a flexible approach.
