Subhash Chandra, Chairman, Essel Group

Born on November 30, 1950, at Adampur Mandi village in the Hissar district of Haryana, Subhas Chandra comes from a family of grain traders.

Born on November 30, 1950, at Adampur Mandi village in the Hissar district of Haryana, Subhas Chandra, the chairman of the Essel Group, comes from a family of grain traders.

The eldest of seven siblings, Chandra set up an oil mill in 1973 when he was just 19. Three years later, in 1976, he started exporting grain to Russia.

1976 marked the beginning of Subhash Chandra's first company; Rama Associates Limited. It has executed export orders of more than Rs 500 cr since then.

Set up in 1984 Essel Packaging Limited is Asia's largest manufacturer of plastic laminated tubes with operations in India, China, Germany, Egypt and Nepal.

Forseeing & Fulfilling customer needs has driven most of Subhash Chandra's projects. The market had for long ignored the entertainment needs of people. Subhash Chandra perceived this and set up India's first hi-tech amusement park; Esselworld in 1989. This was followed by Water Kingdom, Asia's biggest water park With the theme parks drawing more than 2 million visitors every year.

Incorporated in 1982, Zee Telefilms Ltd (ZTL), the Groups' media flagship, has a market capitalization of $2.8 billion as on November 8, 2000. With the launch of Zee TV, Subhash Chandra gave a new definition to entertainment. Zee Network today has a bouquet of 14 satellite TV channels over the Indian sub-continent and enjoys a 200 million worldwide viewership.

Recognition by the industry

Ernst & Young in 1999 conferred Subhash Chandra with the Enterpreneur of the Year award. Business Standard honoured Subhash Chandra with the Business Standard Businessman of the Year(1999). Subhash Chandra was also nominated for the Enterprise CEO of the year by the International Brand Summit held for the first time in India. Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) choose Subhash Chandra as the Chairman of CII Media Committee for two successive years. Zee Telefilms Ltd., Subhash Chandra's media venture was felicitated by the Economic Times with the Emerging Company of the Year (1998)Award. Zee Telefillms Ltd. was also awarded the BSE Award-2000 for Maximisation of shareholders' Wealth.
