Trader hit by rally car, dies
A 50-YEAR-OLD businessman died and his wife was seriously injured when their motorcycle hit by a car of one of the participants of the Car Rally-2006 at Murrey Company Bridge under the Harbansmohal police station this morning. The car was coming from the Cantonment side while the couple was coming from Mall Road when the accident occurred. The rally was organised by Kanpur Industrial Jaycees (KIJ) and was flagged off by SSP PC Meena.

The deceased, identified as Anil Chandra Mishra, a resident of 15/ 271, Civil Lines, was owner of Gorakhpur Handlooms at Court Road. On Sunday, like every week he was going along with his wife Sharda on a mobike to offer prayers at Har-Har Dham temple in Shyam Nagar when the accident took place.
According to eyewitnesses, three rally cars were trying to overtake one another when Anil’s bike was badly crushed by a car whose rally number was 53 and registration number UP 78 AL 857.
The collision was so hard that Anil died on the spot while Sharda was admitted to UHM hospital where doctors reported his condition as critical.
Doctors at UHM hospital said Sharda’s left shoulder was badly crushed in the accident besides head injury.
Soon after the accident, crowd thrashed the driver and owner of the car Ashish Sethi, a resident of Lal Bangla. At the same time a person on a scooter reached the spot and after slapping Ashish told the crowd that he was taking him to police station but disappeared. Meanwhile, the Harbansmohal police denied the arrest of Ashish.
Eyewitnesses said around 9.30 am several speeding cars were spotted passing from the Murrey Company bridge. They said the cars were coming from the Cantonment side and were entering the busiest Mall Road in the city. People who were present at the spot said when this accident occurred three cars were moving adjacent to each other with great speed and the entire road on the bridge was blocked for commuters coming from the opposite direction.
Rally-06 called off
THE ANNUAL mega motorsport event, Car Rally-2006, organised by KIJ came to an abrupt end following death of a man and injury to his wife when one of the rally participants’ car collided with a motorcycle here on Sunday morning.
The tragedy also led to organisers deciding to call off the ‘Kajrare Nite’ and laughter show programme along with the award giving ceremony scheduled to be held in the evening.
Over hundred cars including eight vintage ones participated in the rally. The participants and organiser were fully charged up with joy and sportsmanship. All participants were jubilant and thrilled for being part of the rally which has been taking place for the last 23 years. The rally is the only motorsport event in the city.
However, as soon as information reached office-bearers of KIJ, they called off the rally immediately and started their efforts to give all possible support to the bereaved family.
According to KIJ president Manoj Murarka, they were shocked to hear about the tragedy during the rally and they immediately called off the rally. The
rally was to pass through all main parts of the city and timing for
the same was three and a half hours.
Murarka said, “Presently all members of the KIJ were giving emphasis for the well-being of the deceased’s wife, who was injured in the accident.” He added that all the best possible efforts were on from their end to provide support to the kin of the deceased.
Vice-president of KIJ Atul Gupta said that an urgent meeting was held to decide the follow-up action of the incident. However, it was decided that entertainment program ‘Kajrarre Nite’ a musical extravaganza and Laughter show-cum-award distributing ceremony should also be called off, which was to take place today at the Cawnpore Club.
