The army confronted the two heavily armed infiltrators when they were trying to sneak into Gurez sector, 160 kms from Srinagar, a defence spokesman said.

The ultras were asked to surrender but they opened fire at the security forces, he said, adding in the ensuing gun battle the duo was killed.

Operation was continuing when reports last came in.
