ARMED WITH facts and figures, varsity authorities are once again ready to plead with the State Government why they need more funds.
In fact, they have already worked out a factual counter to the chief minister’s one-liner “generate your own funds.” Vice- chancellor RP Singh argues: “The Lucknow University has 35,000 residential students against 500 teachers, which is a phenomenon in itself. Kolkata university, however, has 800 teacher for at least 15,000 students. Do you see the difference? So, they can afford to manage things at their own. But, in our case, we need government’s support.”
The V-C’s reply seemed to be an answer to the chief minister’s snubbing that he received during a recent function on the campus.
V-C RP Singh said this while speaking to the press on completion of one year in office on Friday.
“I’m sure when we would compile all the figures and logically explain them the ground realities, the CM and his team would be able to understand the problem in better light,” said the V-C.
He lamented that in the past people have never explained these technicalities to the State Government. “Hence they are ignorant about the problems that we are facing. Of late, the UGC sanctioned a few teaching posts and made partial payment for the same. However, the posts could not be created as the State Government did not gave the matching salary,” he said.
What’s your biggest achievement? Pat came the answer from V-C: “Transparent administration, decentralization of powers by creating numerous committees and appointment of about 50 new faculty members.” Frequent interaction with faculty members, teachers and students helped to know their feedback as well.
Rate your performance in the scale of 1 to 10? “I would rate it as 9,” he said.
The V-C said that he is confident that semester system would be well receive by the students. The V-C added: “I’ve interacted with the students and over 90 pc of them are happy with it. Its only the few student leaders who are opposing them. I’m least bothered about them as the genuine students are welcoming it. From 2006-07 it would be introduced in all the PG courses.”
“Compliance to recommendations of National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) is our priority as we want to get better rating when the next assessment takes place.
