They were rushed to Jupiter Hospital where they were declared dead before admission. Bhavna Pandey (33), with her daughter Ira, jumped from a window near the staircase of Basil Apartment in Everest World in Thane (West).

The watchman was the first to see the bodies behind the 18-storey building.

“I was inside the building when I heard a thud around 1.20 pm. When I went behind the building, I saw both of them lying on the ground. I immediately informed the woman’s brother and his family,” said watchman J.B. Thapa.

Though the exact reason of suicide is not yet known, police said Bhavna was mentally unstable and used to stay with her parents.

“She had some psychiatric problem and was undergoing treatment. She married Vishwaprakash Pandey seven years ago. Her husband, who is unemployed, and in-laws are in Indore. She left her husband and came to live with her parents in Thane about two years ago,” said police inspector Meera Bansode.

On Sunday, she went to her brother’s house on the building’s third floor for the Satyanarayan puja with her parents. It was also her nephew’s birthday.

“Ira started crying and to pacify her Bhavna took her upstairs. Later her brother was told about the bodies on the ground,” said Bansode.

Residents of Everest World are shaken by the incident.
