93 year old Kannoth Karunakaran, who passed away on Thursday, had served as Union Industry Minister under the late P V Narasimha Rao in the nineties.

"In his death, we have lost a towering personality in public life. I pray the almighty to bestow enough strength on the family to bear the loss", Yeddyurappa said in his condolence message.

Karunakaran was in the hospital since December 10 this year and breathed his last around 5.30pm on Thursday after his condition turned critical following a stroke. He was known for simplicity and political acumen, Yeddyurappa said.
