A Lokayukta team raided the residential premises of a jailed clerk of Sanawad panchayat, 75 km from district headquarters, on Sunday morning and laid their hands on several documents related to his property.
Sanwad Janpad panchayat clerk Surendra Verma was arrested and sent to jail a year ago in connection with embezzlement of Rs 2.5 crore during his posting there.
During the preliminary investigation of the documents found on Sunday, it came to light that Verma has 25-acre agriculture land, two houses in Sanawad, eight plots including an 11, 000-square-foot land at Indore’s Umarikheri area, two in Mortaka village and five at Sanawad.
Deputy superintendent BS Parihar said a case was registered against Verma under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
The officer further said Verma amassed wealth through corrupt means.
Acting on a complaint, a team of Lokayukta conducted raids at his residence at Sanawad town.
He said Verma amassed movable and immovable assets worth Rs 2.5 crore disproportionate to his known sources of income.
He further said while Verma’s salary was around Rs 20,000 he amassed property worth Rs 2.5 crore.
