Tension prevailed in Nandan Nagar as locals carried out protests after a pregnant woman was allegedly harassed by a local goon named Sandeep Dagar.

A police team reached the area late on Saturday after the woman registered a complaint at the Chandan Nagar police station. The protesters turned violent after the police tried to stop them from ransacking Dagar’s house.

The locals attacked the policemen with stones causing injuries to seven. They also threw petrol bombs at a police vehicle, the cops claimed. The policemen were being treated at a nearby hospital.

"We have booked more than three dozen people under sections 307 and 353 and more arrests could follow. Seven policemen were injured in stone pelting by the residents and investigation in the case is going on," superintendent of police (west) Abid Khan told HT.

The police cordoned off the area where the incident took place and deployed extra men to maintain law and order. They also launched a hunt for the accused who was absconding.
