A farmer, who had entered a 55-foot-deep bore well to repair a pump, was buried under soil after side walls collapsed on him on Wednesday.

The incident took place at Gadhi Basai village under the Rudawal police station in Bharatpur district.

The district administration was carrying out a rescue operation at the time of last reports came in.

Around 10 am, Ashok Sharma, 40, along with his brother, had gone to repair a bore well pump, as it was time to irrigate fields for the rabi season. While his brother stayed up, Ashok entered the 55-foot-deep bore well to repair the pump. Suddenly, the mud from side walls collapsed on Ashok.

After his brother raised an alarm, many people rushed to the scene of incident. Bharatpur district collector Narendra Kumar Gupta said that a team of National Disaster Response Force (SDRF), army, civil defense and local police were carrying out an operation to rescue the farmer. JCB machines have been deployed to remove the soil, he added.

Rupwas sub-divisional magistrate Paras Ram Meena, Bayana circle officer Himanshu Sharma, additional superintendent of police Satish Chandra Jangid and some station house officers were at the spot to monitor the operation. The farmer has two sons and two daughters. The family depends on 14-acre agriculture land in the village for livelihood.
