Mathur told PTI that he had submitted his resignation to party president Rajnath Singh immediately after the results of the Lok Sabha elections were announced.

“I am the first one to accept the party’s poor performance in Rajasthan....Let other senior leaders show courage and take responsibility for the defeat,” Mathur, who is also an MP from Rajasthan, said.

“The defeat in the polls was the failure of the entire party and its leaders,” he said, blaming former Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje for the poll debacle.
