The Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Lok Sabha candidate from Northwest Delhi constituency Hans Raj Hans, on Friday, said opening hospitals, especially in the constituency’s rural part, improving existing medical facilities and social security will be his priorities.

The BJP gave ticket to the famous Punjabi folk and sufi singer, ignoring sitting MP Udit Raj, who joined the Congress on Wednesday.

The 57-year-old singer, a resident of Jalandhar, who had visited the constituency while campaigning for the BJP candidate in 2017 municipal elections, said he is aware of the area’s problems. “I will work to address water scarcity and air pollution in northwest Delhi seat, which is majorly a rural constituency.”

“There is a lack of hospitals, especially in rural parts of the constituency. We will make hospitals and fulfil a long pending demand of voters. Social security, improved water supply and farmers’ welfare will be my other areas of focus,” Hans said on the sidelines of a BJP-organised programme on Friday.

Lack of hospitals is a major problem in the villages and unauthorised colonies of northwest Delhi. People living in the villages bordering Haryana have to either go to government hospital in Pooth Khurd or Sanjay Gandhi Hospital in Mangolpuri, both of which are around 10-12km away.

The construction of hospitals has been a long pending demand, but no one, be it the sitting MP or the state government, have been able to do much about it.

When asked if campaigning in his constituency will be issue-based or depend on the popularity of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Hans said, “If the head of any party is honest and works for the welfare of the public, the voting will also be in his name. Modiji has worked for national security, so we all should support him.” Earlier, at an event organised to introduce all the BJP candidates to the media, Hans sang songs praising Modi.
