Lok Sabha elections 2019: In rally, Congress to add star power

“We are trying to organise the mega rally at the Ramlila Maidan. The dates will be decided in the next few days at the convenience of the leaders. Most probably closer to the polling date in Delhi,” a senior Congress leader said on Friday.

To strengthen its campaign in Delhi, the Congress has decided to deploy its ‘star campaigners’ to help candidates reach out to the voters.

Senior Delhi Congress leaders said that the state unit has written to the party high command requesting a “massive” rally and the presence of top leadership, including Congress president Rahul Gandhi, United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi and party general secretary, Uttar Pradesh, Priyanka Gandhi and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

“We are trying to organise the mega rally at the Ramlila Maidan. The dates will be decided in the next few days at the convenience of the leaders. Most probably closer to the polling date in Delhi,” a senior Congress leader said on Friday.

Leaders also said that celebrity leaders, such as new entrant Shatrughan Sinha and former cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu, are also expected to be a part of the ‘mega rally’.

Apart from the rally, Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi are also likely to campaign separately. While Rahul is likely to address “one or two” campaigns in different constituencies, Priyanka has been requested to do a road show with all the seven candidates.

Congress has fielded three-time former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit from North East Delhi, former MPs Ajay Maken from New Delhi, Mahabal Mishra from West Delhi, JP Agarwal from Chandni Chowk, former legislators Arvinder Singh Lovely from East Delhi, Rajesh Lilothia from the reserved seat of North West Delhi, and professional boxer Vijender Singh from South Delhi for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
