Lok Sabha elections 2019: Will make sedition law more stringent: Rajnath Singh
“The opposition wants to please those people who want to break the country by doing away with the anti-sedition law, but we will never allow it to happen,” Rajnath Singh said.
Union home minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday said that if the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) comes back to power, then it will make the sedition law more stringent so that anti-national activities are curbed and those who think of indulging in such things have fear of the law. Singh was addressing an election rally in Bhondsi near Gurugram city where he asked the people to vote for Rao Inderjit Singh, BJP candidate from Gurgaon Lok Sabha constituency.
“The opposition wants to please those people who want to break the country by doing away with the anti-sedition law, but we will never allow it to happen,” he said.
Bhondsi area has a large number of Rajput voters and party members said Singh’s rally was aimed at engaging with the people of the community. “This is an important national election and I request people to vote for the BJP candidate as he is an honest person who has worked tirelessly for this region,” said Singh. He also said that the people of Gurgaon should vote this time to strengthen the “hands of PM Narendra Modi”.
Earlier, Singh thanked the people who stayed back for the rally despite him getting late for over two hours. Around four to five thousand people from Bhondsi and villages around it were present in the rally.
Pointed to some of the BJP-led government’s schemes, the Union minister said that the government built 1.25 crore homes under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), and issued 13.5 crore gas connections under Ujjwala scheme.
He said that highways are being built at the rate of 30km per day and over 95% homes had got toilets during the BJP rule. “If you want a strong and stable government, then you must vote for Inderjit Singh, who is a 24-carat person,” he asserted.
Later in the evening at a public meeting, chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar exhorted the people of Gurugram to ensure maximum voting in favour of the BJP candidate. He was speaking at New Colony in the heart of old Gurugram in front of a largely Punjabi population.
“This election is not an ordinary election. It is being fought to strengthen the country and on the issues of nationalism, integrity and sovereignty of India,” said Khattar. This government has improved the infrastructure in Gurgaon through several projects and helped improve the people’s lives, he said, adding transparent jobs and end to corruption was evident in the state.
He further said that Congress was hitting at morale of the army as it was questioning the Balakot airstrike. “Haryana contributes almost 10% manpower to the armed forces. But when questions are raised at its patriotism, then it hurts the people,” said the CM.
BJP candidate and sitting MP Rao Inderjit Singh said that real development in Gurgaon has taken place only in the last four-and-a-half years after the BJP government came to power. “We have been able to set up GMDA, the bus service has been launched now, the Dwarka expressway was stuck but the work has been awarded and several such things can be counted. I want you to ensure the victory of BJP to strengthen the hands of PM Modi,” he said.
Former Congress minister Sukhbir Kataria, however, said that the matters raised by Union minister Rajnath Singh and CM Khattar were not very relevant in the context of Gurgaon. “Gurgaon needs water, reduction in pollution, housing for all, and extension of metro train. But none of these issues were raised by these leaders. India has remained safe and united under Congress for 60 years. The BJP sees nothing but threats everywhere,” said Kataria.
