While sensitising people about road safety, Raju mentioned that couples commuting on two-wheelers in Lucknow and Kanpur are often more “protective about the helmet”, as women keep the helmet in their lap while their husbands drive.

“Helmet bachana hai ki pati ka sir (want to save helmet or husband’s head)?” Stand-up comedy artiste Raju Srivastav posed this question on a serious note when hundreds of passers-by gathered to watch him at 1090 crossing in Lucknow on Tuesday afternoon during a traffic awareness drive.

Violators asked to watch Raju’s programme
  • SSP (Lucknow) Deepak Kumar carried out a vehicle checking drive at 1090 crossing.
  • Instead of penalising violators, he asked them to watch Srivastava’s programme.
  • Raju Srivastav intercepted some commuters who were driving without seat belts or riding two-wheelers without helmets and urged them to follow traffic rules.

While sensitising people about road safety, he mentioned that couples commuting on two-wheelers in Lucknow and Kanpur are often more “protective about the helmet”, as women keep the helmet in their lap while their husbands drive. “Women seem to be more concerned about the helmet rather than their husbands,” he quipped.

Srivastav intercepted some commuters who were driving without seat belts or riding two-wheelers without helmets and urged them to follow traffic rules.

Appreciating the state government’s drive to promote road safety, the artiste also suggested that people use bicycles to save fuel and control air pollution. He himself rode a bicycle for some distance during the awareness event.

IG (Lucknow range) JN Singh, who was also present during the programme, also sensitised people about road safety. He said a beloved member of his family was killed in a road accident a few years ago, after which he realised that a little negligence by someone could cost another person’s life.

Before the event, SSP Lucknow Deepak Kumar carried out a vehicle checking drive at 1090 crossing. Instead of penalising them, he asked the violators to watch Srivastava’s programme. Several other senior police officials, including STF IG Amitabh Yash, were also present at the programme.
