The order of disconnecting power supply has upset the tannery owners as according to them they were not informed about the action and the grounds of disconnecting power supply.

The Uttar Pradesh pollution Control Board (UPPCB) on Wednesday directed district authorities to disconnect the power supply of all the 225 existing tanneries in Kanpur which were closed in November last. Consequently, the district magistrate VV Pant has constituted teams of magistrates and KESCO engineers for the purpose. The teams have been asked to submit their reports with certificate of disconnection by 4 pm on May 18, 2019.

The order has upset the tannery owners as according to them they were not informed about the action and the grounds of disconnecting power supply.

Jamal Nayyar of Small Tannery Association said there are 400 tanneries in the city out of which 50 were dismantled while others were lying closed for various reasons. “Only 260 tanneries are operative. Now barring a few big tanneries (about 35) all others will be deprived of power supply,” he said.
