A sessions court on Friday sentenced two men to life imprisonment for killing a 32-year-old tailor by slitting his throat with a razor and then dumping his body in a suitcase in Malad. The statement of one of the convict’s sons, aged seven and 12, before the magistrate proved to be a crucial piece of evidence.

The body of Alam Rehman Khan was found in a suitcase off Malad Marve Road on October 6, 2013. His throat was slit and there were injuries on his head. One of the convicts, also named Alam Khan, had killed his namesake over the suspicion that the victim had an affair with his mother-in-law Nagma.

“Alam’s minor children were eye-witnesses to the crime and had recorded a statement before the magistrate. It gave us crucial headway in the case,” said Dhananjay Ligade, inspector with MHB police station. Ligade was then attached to the Bangur Nagar police station investigating the murder.

Alam and his accomplice, Sikandar, had planned the murder with Alam’s father – the third accused wanted in the case, police sources said. Alam has a rap-sheet and was a habitual chain snatcher. Nagma acted as a surety in one of the cases, sources said.

The men invited the tailor for drinks at their house in Bangur Nagar. When he was in an inebriated state, the accused smashed a tile on his head and then slit his throat with a razor, additional public prosecutor Ravi Salve told the court. They then stuffed Khan’s body in a suitcase and dumped it. The convicted duo was nabbed by the Mumbai crime branch from Kolkata after tracing their cellphone locations a few days after finding the body.

The other witnesses included a house-help from whom the accused purchased the suitcase for Rs 2,000, a man who saw them dragging the suitcase down the stairs and an auto-rickshaw driver in whose vehicle they reached Marve to dump the suitcase.

Additional sessions judge DK Bhende convicted the duo and sentenced them to life imprisonment in the murder. The judge also directed the Bangur Nagar police to continue investigations into the matter and file a chargesheet when the wanted accused is held.
